Anti-transpirants (also known as anti-perspirants) act on the eccrine and apocrine sweat glands, reducing sweat secretion. Because there’s less sweat you’ll notice less dampness and less odour. Most anti-transpirants contain the active substances Aluminium Chlorohydrate (ACH) and Aluminium Chloride (AC). AC molecules are smaller and have a lower pH value than the ACH molecules so they can get even deeper into the sweat ducts and keep them closed for longer. Even small quantities of antiperspirant can effectively reduce sweating.
Changing your lifestyle won’t cure primary hyperhidrosis (the type that doesn’t have any underlying medical causes), but it can improve the symptoms and make you feel better about yourself. Avoid spicy foods and alcohol. Wear loose clothing, ideally natural fibres – such as cotton – against your skin, and wear leather or canvas on your feet.
People with hyperhidrosis sweat four or five times more than average. They also tend to have at least one episode of excessive sweating a week. There’s no precise measure at which point heavy sweating becomes hyperhidrosis but if you feel your sweating is affecting your day-to-day life, you may want to see your doctor or a dermatologist.
