Anti-age sunscreen with UV and HEVL defense

Eucerin Sun Fluid Anti-Age SPF 50 is a very high factor daily facial sunscreen for all skin types. It helps to prevent premature skin ageing caused by sunlight (known as photoageing) and protects skin from sunburn and sun-induced damage.

While most modern sun care products protect against UVA and UVB rays, Eucerin Sun Fluid Anti-Age SPF 50 takes sun protection to the next level by also working to combat the oxidative stress caused by High Energy Visible Light (HEV Light). The formula moisturises as it protects, boosting skin’s own ability to retain moisture, plumping skin from the inside out and reducing the appearance of deep wrinkles.

UVB rays penetrate the outermost layers of skin (the epidermis) and can cause sunburn. UVA and HEV Light rays penetrate into the deeper layers of skin (the dermis) and generate free radicals. These interfere with skin cell activity, damage skin’s collagen and elastic fibres and can cause skin to age prematurely: skin begins to lose volume and sag and deep wrinkles form. UV rays are also associated with sun allergies, and all three types of rays can induce hyperpigmentation and may contribute to conditions such as sun spots (also known as age spots) and melasma.

In addition to a highly effective, broadband and photostable UVA/UVB filter system1, the innovative Eucerin Sun Fluid Anti-Age formula contains two powerful antioxidants – Licochalcone A and Glycyrrhetinic Acid – which work together to help protect skin from signs of photoageing. Licochalcone A neutralises the free radicals in sunlight that cause oxidative stress and accelerate skin ageing, while Glycyrrhetinic Acid stimulates skin’s own DNA repair mechanisms.
The formula is also rich in Hyaluronic Acid which moisturises skin, increases skin’s own ability to bind in more water and plumps it from the inside out, reducing the appearance of deep wrinkles.
Eucerin Sun Fluid Anti-Age SPF 50 has a light texture, absorbs quickly with a matt finish and leaves skin soft, supple and protected.

Clinical and dermatological studies

Clinical and dermatological studies have proven very good skin tolerability on sensitive skin, including those with very sensitive skin and skin that has been sensitized by laser and peeling treatments.

Main findings

329 women tested Eucerin Sun Fluid Anti-Age SPF 50 in a hot and humid climate. This in-home study showed excellent results:

  • 97% agreed “The product leaves a pleasant skin feeling”
  • 96% agreed “The product has a pleasant, light texture”
  • 93% agreed “The product is absorbed quickly by the skin”
  • 89% agreed “The product does not leave a greasy and sticky feeling on my skin after application”

In a further in vivo efficacy study women (aged 35-65) applied Eucerin Sun Fluid Anti-Age twice a day in a split-face trial. After four weeks of regular use, they reported that wrinkles and fine lines on the face and décolleté are visibly reduced.

An independent study conducted using Eucerin Sun Fluid Anti-Age SPF 50 has proven that the active ingredient in the Eucerin formula, Licochalcone A, offers effective and extended protection: from HEV Light in addition to UV rays.1

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Apply generously before sun exposure and reapply frequently − especially after swimming, perspiring or toweling − to maintain the original protection.
  • Reducing the amount of product used will lower the level of protection significantly.
  • You can use your palm to measure how much product to use. As a general rule, we recommend that, to cover your head and neck, you use a thick line of sun lotion that stretches from the inside of your middle finger down to your wrist.
  • Don’t forget your ears, lips and the back of your neck. And, if you’re bald or have thinning hair, your scalp.
  • Do not stay too long in the sun, even while using a sunscreen product: sunscreens with high SPFs do not offer 100% protection. Over-exposure to the sun is a serious health threat.
  • Keep babies and young children out of direct sunlight.
  • Avoid contact with eyes.
  • Allow product to absorb completely, and avoid direct contact with textiles and hard surfaces to prevent staining.

Frequently Asked Questions

What SPF sunscreen do I need?

Sun sensitivity varies from person to person. The SPF, or Sun Protection Factor, indicates the additional amount of time it will take for skin to burn compared to not using sun protection. So, a person who would get burnt after 30 minutes without sunscreen can be protected for five hours if using a sunscreen. However, this SPF is dependent on sufficient product being used.  We recommend you only stay in the sun for 60% of the SPF allowance and remember that skin damage can occur even before sunburn is visible. If you are in any doubt about how your particular skin is likely to react to the sun, consult a dermatologist for advice.

What is the difference between UVA and UVB rays?

UVA rays penetrate the deeper layers of skin. They stimulate the production of free radicals in the skin which cause oxidative stress and can lead to indirect DNA damage (where the free radicals modify cellular DNA over time). UVA rays are most commonly associated with premature skin ageing (or photoageing). They can also trigger sun allergies such as PLE (UVB rays can also provoke allergies, but to a lesser degree).

Because UVA rays can lead to indirect DNA damage they are also associated with skin diseases such as cancer, though to a much lesser extent than UVB.

UVB rays provide the energy your skin needs to make Vitamin D, and they stimulate the production of melanin which is responsible for tanning. They don’t travel as deeply as UVA rays, penetrating only the outermost layers of skin, but they cause more immediate damage to skin such as sunburn and direct DNA damage the protons in UVB light are directly absorbed by cellular DNA) which can lead to skin diseases such as actinic keratosis and skin cancer.

Both types of UV rays can induce hyperpigmentation and may contribute to conditions such as sun spots (also known as age spots) and melasma.

What is HEV Light and why does my skin need to be protected from it?

The sunlight spectrum consists of UV, Visible and Infrared Light. Visible sunlight can be detected by the human eye, while the others remain invisible. Part of this visible spectrum has a high energy level and is known as High Energy Visible Light. It is also referred to as HEV Light, HEVL and sometimes ‘blue light’ and ‘blue violet light’.

While the affect that UVA and UVB light have on skin are fairly well documented, the discovery that HEV Light also impacts on skin health is more recent.

Like UVA rays, it penetrates into the lower layers of skin (the dermis) and can generate free radicals. These free radicals are what causes skin to photoage (age prematurely as a result of sun exposure) and wrinkle because they damage skin cells and break down the collagen and elastin that gives our skin its plump, youthful appearance. Along with UV rays, HEV Light has also been linked to hyperpigmentation and may contribute to conditions such as sun spots (also known as age spots) and melasma.

Many modern sun creams and lotions offer effective protection against UVA and UVB rays, but we recommend that you look out for products that also include ingredients proven to combat the oxidative stress caused by HEV Light. These products will give your skin the best possible protection against photoageing and can also help to combat the visible signs of skin ageing such as wrinkles.

Why should I integrate sun face care into my daily routine?

Facial skin is thinner and more sensitive to solar radiation. It is also more exposed to sun all year round than the skin on the rest of the body. To avoid cellular DNA damage, photoageing and hyperpigmentation it is important to protect facial skin whenever it is exposed to the sun.

Can I put make-up over my sunscreen?

Eucerin Sun Fluid Anti-Age SPF 50 is an ideal make-up base. Both liquid and powder-based make-up can be safely applied without affecting the level of sun protection. Do remember, however, to reapply sun protection regularly throughout the day.

What are Licochalcone A and Glycyrrhetinic Acid?

Licochalcone A and Glycyrrhetinic Acid are powerful anti-oxidants originally found in Liquorice root. They have been proven to work together to protect skin cells in the deeper epidermal layers from sun-induced damage.
Licochalcone A neutralises the free radicals that cause oxidative stress and accelerate skin ageing), while Glycyrrhetinic Acid stimulates skin’s own DNA repair mechanisms.

What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic Acid is a substance naturally produced by skin that helps it to bind in moisture. It can hold thousands of times its own weight in water. It’s a component of the extra cellular matrix of the epidermis (the outermost layers of skin) and the dermis (the middle layers of skin) and plumps up skin volume from the inside.

What is the difference between Eucerin Sun Fluid Anti-Age and Eucerin Hyaluron-Filler CC Cream?

While both products have anti-aging properties and reduce fine lines and wrinkles, Eucerin Sun Fluid Anti-Age SPF 50 contains a much higher SPF to protect from sun induced damage and photoageing. Eucerin Hyaluron-Filler CC Cream has an SPF of 15.

Eucerin Hyaluron-Filler CC Cream is also tinted, with colour pigments that offer instant complexion correction, whereas Eucerin Sun Fluid Anti-Age SPF 50 is not.
