Hyperpigmentation is common skin concern and can cause distress when it is very noticaeble. The Eucerin Anti-Pigment range as been clinically proven to reduce the appearance of age spots (also known as sun spots) for more even and radiant skin. In this article Dr Ludger Kolbe, medical skincare and R&D expert at Eucerin, introduces Thiamidol, the key active in the formula, and explains the science behind the innovative and the effective Anti-Pigment range.

What causes an uneven skin tone?

An uneven skin tone is often the result of pigmentation issues such as hyperpigmentation. “Hyperpigmentation is caused by increased Melanin production,” says Dr Ludge Kolbe. “Our skin has specialized cells, called melanocytes, which produce the dark pigment melanin,” he explains. “It gives skin its color and some natural protection from sunlight, but over-exposure to sunlight, hormonal influences, aging and skin injury or inflammation can cause an increase in melanin and trigger hyperpigmentation.”

Hyperpigmentation appears as dark patches and age spots (also known as sun spots) that make skin look uneven. The overproduction of melanin is also the root causes of conditions such as melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Dr Kolbe explains that “while hyperpigmented skin is normally harmless it can cause distress and impact the quality of life of those that experience it.”

A breakthrough discovery from Eucerin scientists

Backed by Eucerin’s 100 years of medical skincare expertise, Dr Kolbe and his team set out to create a formula that would deliver results for people with uneven skin and pigmentation concerns.

“We ran a huge screening program,” explains Dr Kolbe. “We tested more than 50,000 potential ingredients in the quest to find an active that would reduce hyperpigmentation while being kind on skin.” Key to the Eucerin research approach was the methodology used to test the candidate ingredients. In the past, formulas had been tested on mushroom enzymes, but Dr Kolbe and his team insisted on testing the actives on human enzymes as a more accurate measure of their potential effectiveness.

Eucerin-patented Thiamidol is the key active in the Anti-Pigment range

The breakthrough was when the team discovered Thiamidol, which presented significant and impressive results in clinical and dermatological tests. “Thiamidol acts at the root cause of hyperpigmentation by reducing melanin production,” explains Dr Kolbe, “and it’s effective on all skin types and tones.”

Impressive results for the Eucerin Anti-Pigment range

The innovative and effective Thiamidol is the key active in the Eucerin Anti-Pigment range and has been clinically and dermatologically proven to reduce dark spots and prevent their re-appearance.

“First results are visible after two weeks and improve continuously with regular use,” says Kolbe. He adds that “we got very positive feedback on the formula from people involved in the tests.”

The Eucerin Anti-Pigment range reduces dark spots and prevents their reappearance

Made using Eucerin’s patented ingredient Thiamidol, the range includes a day cream, a night cream, a dual serum and a topical spot corrector for addressing hyperpigmentation. Tinted day creams in light and medium also include an SPF 30 and UVA filter, while the skin perfecting serum is designed to boost your skin’s natural radiance. The sun is the number one cause of hyperpigmentation as it’s sunlight that triggers the production of melanin in the first place, so wearing appropriate sun protection on a daily basis is a key step to preventing new age spots from forming.

The unique Eucerin Anti-Pigment Dual Serum brings together two serums that work in different ways:

  • Thiamidol: an effective and patented ingredient that acts at the root cause of hyperpigmentation and is clinically proven to reduce hyperpigmentation, preventing its re-appearance with regular usage
  • Concentrated Hyaluronic Acid: one of skin’s most effective moisturizing substances helps skin to attract and retain moisture

A Product in Use (PIU) study2 on the day cream and the serum showed very positive results. 120 women aged between 25 and 55. reported the following after firstly two and then four weeks of regular use:

After 2 weeks  After 4 weeks
The product makes my skin more even 97%

The product makes my skin radiant 94%

The product effectively fights dark spots

The product prevents the appearance of dark spots

“Eucerin Anti-Pigment was ten years in the making and we’re extremely proud of what we’ve achieved,” says Dr Kolbe. First results are visible after two weeks and improve continuously with regular use, making the range an effective dermo-cosmetic approach to many forms of hyperpigmentation. “In addition,” concludes Kolbe, “Eucerin Anti-Pigment can be used alongside dermatological treatments such as chemical peels and laser therapies to boost and extend results.”
