Licochalcone A is a powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and skin-soothing ingredient. It is derived from the root of the Chinese Licorice plant (Glycyrrhiza Inflata) which uses natural compounds to protect its cells from excessive sunlight. When used in skincare products, Licochalcone A works to reduce inflammation and neutralize free radicals that negatively influence skin cells and accelerate the aging process. It helps to protect the deeper epidermal skin layers from sun-induced effects.
Hyaluronic Acid is formed by skin cells and is part of the connective tissue of the skin. One of its key functions is to retain moisture, and it has the ability to bind in between 1,000 and 10,000 times its own weight in water (i.e. one gram binds between one and ten liters). As we age, the skin's natural ability to produce Hyaluronic Acid depletes and wrinkles start to form and deepen.
Ceramides are important lipids in the hydrolipid film (which protects the external layers of skin). Produced naturally in healthy skin, they strengthen the skin barrier, helping to prevent moisture loss due to evaporation and keeping out irritants that can cause inflammation and itching. When skin’s Ceramide levels fall the skin barrier is impaired. Skin can start to lose water and become dry and irritated.
Eucerin uses synthetic Ceramides that are biologically-identical and that enhance skin’s natural barrier – locking in moisture and preventing dryness and irritation.
Grape Seed Oil is a rich source of essential fatty acids and Vitamin E. The polyphenols and flavonoids found in Grape Seed Oil are strong anti-oxidant compounds and, thus, provide protection from damage caused by free radicals while Linoleic acid soothes and nourishes skin.
What is the difference between Eucerin AtopiControl Calming Hydro-Lotion and Rich Calming Lotion?
The Hydro-Lotion and the Lotion are both ideal for use on atopic skin all over the body. They are both effective at soothing skin and supporting its natural barrier function. The choice of which product to use comes down to textural preference: the Lotion is a water-in-oil formulation and is richer; the oil-in-water Hydro-Lotion has an ultra-light texture, that absorbs in less than 60 seconds and is asy to spread also in summertime as well as on hairy body parts.
What do you mean by ‘flare-up’ and the ‘period between flare-ups’?
Broadly speaking, Atopic Dermatitis has two different phases. A ‘flare-up’ is one of the names used to describe the acute, active phase when skin is at its most irritable. It can feel intensely itchy, you may experience a burning sensation and skin can look red, dry and flaky. Between these acute, flare-up phases are periods of time when your skin is relatively calm and less irritated. This period is also known as the non-acute, non-active or interval phase. The length of each phase varies greatly depending on the individual, but products specially formulated to treat and care for atopic skin − such as those in the Eucerin AtopiControl range − can help to extend the period between flare-ups and offer relief during acute flare-ups.
Is Atopic Dermatitis the same as Eczema?
Dermatitis and Eczema are the same thing: collective terms for inflammatory changes in the skin. As such, they include many different dermatological diseases. Atopic Eczema and Atopic Dermatitis are also the same thing.
Is the Eucerin AtopiControl Calming Hydro-Lotion suitable as an all over body moisturizer for daily use?
Yes, Eucerin AtopiControl Calming Hydro-Lotion is a daily-use body balm that has been specially formulated to soothe and intensely moisturize irritated and itchy skin.
