Palm Oil is a plant-based raw material, which is derived from the pulp of the fruit of the oil palm tree, while Palm (kernel) Oil is extracted from the seeds of the oil palm. It is typically found in food, cosmetic products, or used for energy. Oil palms can provide comparatively high oil yields per hectare compared to several other vegetable oil crops. Palm (kernel) Oil derivatives are used in the production of cosmetic ingredients such as emulsifiers and surfactants to provide the skin with enough oil and moisture.

Palm oil cultivation can be associated with environmental and social challenges, including deforestation risks in certain sourcing regions. Protecting forests is important because forests store carbon and provide habitats for plants and animals. All palm (kernel) oil-based materials that are used for the production of Eucerin products are purchased as RSPO Mass Balance certified materials. Compliance with applicable RSPO supply chain requirements is independently audited and verified. Under the Mass Balance approach, certified and non-certified palm-derived materials may be physically mixed during processing and transport, while equivalent certified volumes are tracked and verified through the RSPO-certified supply chain.

Yes, Eucerin products contain ingredients made from Palm (kernel) Oil. Since the end of 2020, 100% of the volumes of Palm (kernel) Oil derivatives used for the production of our products have been covered by RSPO-certified sourcing through the Mass Balance supply chain model.

We work with suppliers and industry initiatives on activities related to the sourcing, traceability and processing of palm-based raw materials. These activities focus on obtaining supply-chain information and supporting the uptake of RSPO-certified volumes.

Eucerin’s parent company, Beiersdorf, supports sourcing approaches and industry initiatives whose stated objectives include addressing deforestation risks in palm oil supply chains:

• Beiersdorf is a member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) and the German Forum for Sustainable Palm Oil (FONAP). These organizations develop or promote standards, criteria and activities addressing environmental and social topics in palm oil supply chains.
• In addition to its RSPO-certified sourcing approach, Beiersdorf supports a landscape project involving NGOs and farmers in Malaysia, one of Beiersdorf’s key sourcing countries. Project activities, such as the promotion of RSPO certification among smallholder and medium-sized farmers, are intended to support agricultural practices and the livelihoods of participating farmers and local communities.
