About
Lip balm for dry, cracked lips
Most people suffer from dry and cracked lips at some point. They’re uncomfortable, sometimes painful, and can make us feel self-conscious too. They need SOS care, and Eucerin Aquaphor SOS Lip Repair delivers immediate care and relief within 60 seconds.
The skin on our lips is thin and doesn’t have any sebaceous glands, so it’s prone to drying out. Cold winds and the sun dry our lips out further making matters worse. Eucerin Aquaphor SOS Lip Repair is clinically and dermatologically proven to soothe and repair dry, cracked lips. The formula, enriched with Glycerin, Dexpanthenol, Bisabolol and Vitamins C and E, creates the ideal protective barrier for lip skin regeneration and makes lips soft and supple again.
When lips send out SOS signals, Eucerin Aquaphor SOS Lip Repair comes to the rescue. The balm is fragrance- and preservative-free and comes in an easy to apply 10ml squeeze tube. It is suitable for adults and children of three years and older.

Panthenol and Dexpanthenol are two names commonly used for the same ingredient. Panthenol converts into Pantothenic Acid (a B Complex Vitamin) in the skin and enhances skin regeneration and repair. When applied regularly, it has been proven to considerably improve symptoms of skin irritation such as dryness, roughness, scaling and redness.
Panthenol/Dexpanthenol is also an effective moisturizer. It improves hydration in the outermost layers of the skin and helps to reduce transepidermal water loss.
Glycerin – sometimes spelt `Glycerine` and also known as Glycerol – is a humectant which means it helps attract water and keep it in the skin. It is a very effective moisturizer that smooths dry skin and gives it long-lasting moisturization and care. It is both colorless and odorless.
Naturally occurring in chamomile and other plants, Bisabolol can also be derived synthetically. It has anti-irritant and anti-inflammatory properties and has been used in skincare for many years.
Vitamin C (also known as ascorbic acid and L-ascorbic acid although these are actually different forms of the vitamin) is an essential nutrient to our overall health and the health of our skin.
Vitamin C is key to collagen synthesis in skin cells. As one of skin’s natural filler substances, collagen gives young skin its firm structure and even appearance but degrades over time. Much of this degradation is caused by free radicals which damage the cells that produce collagen. Vitamin C is also a powerful anti-oxidant and helps to protect skin from free radical damage.
The human body cannot produce Vitamin C itself and so relies on external sources, the most common of which are dietary sources such as citrus fruits. Vitamin C is also an effective ingredient in skincare where it strengthens and ultimately protects the epidermis, keeping skin looking radiant and fresh. One of its forms, L-ascorbic acid, is more active and more widely researched and proven as a skincare ingredient than others. Eucerin uses L-ascorbic acid in Eucerin Hyaluron-Filler Vitamin C Booster. Another form of Vitamin C, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, is more suitable for a lip care product and is used in Eucerin Aquaphor SOS Lip Repair.
Vitamin E (also known as Tocopherol) is a powerful anti-oxidant that protects skin against the free radicals that cause oxidative stress and helps to support its natural resilience.
How is the skin on my lips different to other skin?
Lip skin is much thinner than the skin on the rest of your face. It has fewer melanocytes (the cells that produce melanin, the pigment that give skin its color and protects from UV radiation) and so lips appear red. Lip skin doesn’t have any sweat or sebaceous glands. These glands play a key role in maintaining moisture levels and so the fact that there aren’t any in lip skin makes our lips particularly prone to drying out.
What causes lips to become dry and cracked?
As with most skin conditions, genetics play a role and some people are more prone to dry, cracked lips than others.
Lip skin is thinner than a lot of other skin and doesn’t have any sweat or sebaceous glands. These glands play a key role in producing protective oils that maintain moisture levels and, without them, lips are prone to drying out.
The weather is a significant trigger. People tend to suffer from dry, cracked lips during dry, hot weather or cold windy weather, and so those who spend a lot of time outside due to their jobs or leisure activities are likely to suffer more than others.
Some medications (including medical acne treatments) can cause lips to dry out and crack. And, if you lick you lips regularly, this can also lead to dryness.

How often should I apply Eucerin Aquaphor SOS Lip Repair?
You can apply Eucerin Aquaphor Lip Repair whenever your lips feel dry and tight, and as often as you like. The handy 10ml squeeze tube makes it easy to pop in your bag and carry around with you wherever you go.
What is the advantage of a lip balm over a stick?
Dry, cracked lips are often sensitive and can hurt if you apply pressure. A balm is softer and easier to apply because it is more spreadable. A stick needs a bit more pressure and so is more suited for occasionally dry lips that need a bit of extra moisturization now and then. However, first and foremost, it is about personal preference so you should choose the product that works best for you.
Eucerin Aquaphor SOS Lip Repair has been formulated to be used whenever lips send out SOS signals. The translucent balm has a pleasant ointment-like texture and comes in an applicator tube and so is easy to apply gently, evenly and directly to your lips.
What is the difference between this and the Aquaphor Repairing Ointment?
The SOS Lip Repair has been specially formulated with ingredients suitable for lips / the mouth area and comes in a handy applicator tube that makes it easy apply directly to your lips.
Eucerin Aquaphor Repairing Ointment is ideal for dry, cracked and irritated skin on other problem areas of skin such as the knees and elbows, cracked knuckles and cuticles and cracked heels. It is also suitable for use on babies and children, on minor burns and on skin after superficial dermatological procedures such as laser treatment treatments and chemical peels2. Skin is regenerated, protected and repaired.
2 Eucerin Aquaphor Repairing Ointment should only be used on re-epithelialized skin (i.e. once new tissue has formed) and not on open, wet or bleeding wounds. Ask your Dermatologist for advice on how long you should wait after treatment before using the product.
